Student Finance P60 Lost

Losing your P60 from Student Finance can be a frustrating experience, but it’s a manageable issue. The P60 is a crucial document that summarizes your earnings and the tax you’ve paid over a tax year (April 6th to April 5th). While it’s primarily issued by employers, Student Finance England (SFE), Student Loans Company (SLC), or similar bodies in other parts of the UK provide them if you’ve been employed by them, perhaps in a customer service role, for example.

So, what happens if you’ve misplaced this important piece of information? Don’t panic! The first and most direct approach is to contact Student Finance directly. They should be able to provide you with a duplicate or a copy of your P60. Locate their contact information on their website or through previous correspondence you’ve had with them. When contacting them, be prepared to provide details such as your customer reference number, National Insurance number, and any other information that will help them identify you in their system. This helps expedite the process and ensures they are releasing information to the correct individual.

While waiting for a duplicate P60, consider alternative methods for retrieving the information. If you submitted a Self Assessment tax return in previous years, you may have used the information from your P60 then, and you might have kept a copy of that return. Login to your HMRC online account and check past submissions. The tax information might be readily available. Banks also retain statements that might reflect payments received from Student Finance. This is less likely to explicitly state the tax paid but could provide confirmation of income.

In situations where obtaining a direct replacement proves difficult, you can still manage your tax affairs. HMRC can often estimate your tax liability based on other available information. When contacting them, explain the situation and provide any details about your earnings and tax paid that you can recall or have access to. HMRC might request alternative documents like bank statements showing income from Student Finance. The more information you can provide, the smoother the process will be.

While a lost P60 isn’t ideal, remember that Student Finance and HMRC have processes in place to deal with such occurrences. Contacting Student Finance directly is the quickest solution. However, having alternative records available or understanding how HMRC can assist is essential when a direct replacement is unavailable. Keeping digital copies of important documents like P60s and tax returns in a secure location can prevent this issue in the future.
