Fairfax Finance Park: Experiential Financial Literacy

Fairfax Finance Park, operated by Junior Achievement of Greater Washington, is an immersive, real-world simulation designed to empower middle and high school students with essential financial literacy skills. Located in Fairfax County, Virginia, it’s a capstone experience that builds upon classroom instruction, providing a hands-on opportunity to manage personal finances in a simulated adult world.

Before visiting Finance Park, students participate in a curriculum focused on budgeting, banking, investing, credit, and career planning. This foundational knowledge prepares them to make informed decisions during their simulated day.

The core of Finance Park is a simulated community featuring storefronts representing various aspects of adult life, such as housing, transportation, food, healthcare, and entertainment. Each student is assigned a fictional persona, complete with a career, salary, marital status, and even children. These scenarios are meticulously crafted to reflect the realities of financial responsibility.

Upon arrival, students receive their “paycheck” and a personalized budget worksheet. They then navigate the park, interacting with volunteers who act as financial advisors, sales representatives, and business professionals. They must make choices about housing (rent or mortgage), transportation (car, public transit), insurance, utilities, and other essential expenses. The goal is to create a balanced budget that allows them to meet their needs and potentially save for the future.

The simulation is designed to be challenging. Students quickly learn the consequences of overspending, the importance of prioritizing expenses, and the value of saving and investing. They must make tough choices, like deciding between a more affordable but less desirable apartment or a more expensive car with better fuel efficiency. These decisions highlight the trade-offs inherent in managing personal finances.

Finance Park also emphasizes the importance of credit and debt. Students encounter opportunities to use credit cards, but they also learn about the dangers of accumulating debt and the impact of credit scores. They must consider the interest rates and repayment terms associated with loans and lines of credit.

The program culminates in a final budget review where students analyze their financial performance and identify areas for improvement. They reflect on their decisions and discuss the lessons they learned with their classmates and volunteers.

Fairfax Finance Park provides a powerful and memorable learning experience that helps students develop the skills and knowledge they need to make sound financial decisions throughout their lives. It bridges the gap between classroom theory and real-world application, preparing them to become financially responsible and successful adults.
